"For the ones the world almost overlooked"

It All Began With One Bold Little Girl

When she was just a small girl, Kah Derine Mbong didn’t know what “public speaking” meant. But she knew how to use her voice — and how to fight for what she believed in.

At nursery school enrollment, the head teacher took one look and said,

“She’s too young. Try again next year.”Her mother sighed and turned to leave. But tiny Derine wasn’t done. She stepped forward and said, with all the courage she could summon,
“I’m not too young. Give me a chance, and I’ll show you.”

Then, one by one, she listed the names of everyone in her family — siblings, parents, even grandparents — with clarity and confidence. The head teacher was stunned.

That day, she didn’t just get enrolled. At less than TWO years old, she spoke her way into the system.

From that moment on, Derine’s voice became her power — her passport to rooms she “wasn’t ready for” and tables she “didn’t belong at.”

She led rhymes in kindergarten.
She led dramas in primary and secondary schools.
She was the girl they called on to speak at assemblies and competitions.
By high school, she became Journalism Prefect, writing, leading and inspiring her peers.
And then she became a lawyer — standing in courtrooms, leading arguments, fighting for justice.

But she never forgot that little girl.
The one who spoke herself into school.
The one who refused to be dismissed.
The one who didn’t wait to be given permission to belong.
